Preparation for planting tree peony seeds
1. Seed selection and treatment
Seed selection: Choose fresh, healthy, and plump peony seeds, preferably those harvested in the same year, to ensure their vitality and germination rate.
Seed treatment:
Soak the seeds in warm water at 35-40 ℃ for approximately 12-24 hours to soften the seed coat, promote water absorption and swelling, and accelerate the activity of enzymes inside the seeds, thereby increasing germination rate.
After soaking, remove the seeds and gently wipe them with a clean cloth or tissue to remove the outer skin or flesh. The processed seeds should be dried in a well ventilated and dry place for future use.
If the seeds cannot be sown in time, wet sand burial can be used to promote germination. The mixing ratio is peony seeds: sand=2:8, and the sand used needs to be disinfected thoroughly. Keep the mixed seeds and sand moist with a small sprayer every day for about a month, and the peony seeds will reveal their bud tips. At this time, the germination rate is higher when sown.
2. Soil preparation
Soil selection: Peonies prefer well drained, fertile, and organic rich soil. You can choose sandy loam or loam soil that is deep, fertile, loose, and has good drainage as the planting substrate.
Soil treatment: Before sowing, deeply plow the soil and remove weeds and stones to ensure uniform and fine soil texture. At the same time, organic fertilizers and carbendazim solutions are applied to the soil for disinfection to provide a suitable soil environment and reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.
3. Container preparation
If planting peony seeds in pots, it is necessary to choose pots or planting boxes with good breathability and drainage as planting containers. Before filling the soil, a layer of coarse sand or gravel can be placed at the bottom of the container to facilitate drainage.
4. Sowing time and conditions
Sowing time: Autumn is the ideal season for planting peony seeds, especially when the temperature in the area begins to drop and the nighttime temperature stabilizes below 15 ℃, which is a good time to plant peony seeds. This time point is usually between late September and early October, when the soil temperature and humidity are very suitable for seed germination and growth.
Sowing conditions: Evenly sprinkle the processed peony seeds on the soil surface, with appropriate distance between seeds to avoid overcrowding. After sowing, gently press the soil to make it in close contact with the seeds, and cover it with a thin layer of soil (about 1-2 times the diameter of the seeds). Then keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging, while providing sufficient light and suitable temperature (preferably between 15-25 ℃).
5. Other precautions
Before and during sowing, attention should be paid to keeping the seeds clean and dry to avoid invasion by pests and diseases.
After sowing, it is necessary to regularly check the soil moisture and temperature, and adjust them in a timely manner to meet the growth needs of the seeds.
After the peony seedlings are unearthed, timely tillage, weeding, and fertilization should be carried out to promote the healthy growth of the seedlings.
