The difference between tree peony and herbaceous peony
Tree peony and herbaceous peony are two different plants, although they have some similarities in morphology and color, there are obvious differences between the two. The following is a detailed explanation of the differences between peonies and peonies:
1、 Difference in stems
Tree peony: Tree peony is a perennial deciduous shrub with a woody stem that is hard, brown in color, rough to the touch, and can reach a height of up to 2 meters. In winter, peonies shed their leaves, but their woody stems remain above the ground for the winter.
Herbal Peony: Herbal Peony is a perennial herbaceous plant with grass like stems that are soft, green in color, smooth to the touch, and no taller than 1 meter. In winter, all the above ground parts of peonies wither, and only the roots overwinter underground before sprouting again the following year.
2、 The difference between leaves
Tree peony: The leaves of peonies are broad and thick, with a cracked front end. They are usually compound leaves with two or three lobes and feather like leaves. The leaves are dark in color, dull or sometimes covered with white powder on the back.
Herbal Peony: The leaves of herbaceous peonies are narrow and thin, with narrow and pointed tips, no splitting, dense leaves, bright green color, and waxy luster.
3、 The difference between flowers
Tree peony: Tree peony flowers are solitary at the top of branches, with short stems and often hidden between leaves. They have a variety of flower types, including single, double, lotus, crown, hydrangea, chrysanthemum, rose, etc. The maximum diameter of the flowers can reach 30 centimeters, and the colors are rich, including white, pink, blue, red, green, purple, yellow, black, and multiple colors. Peonies usually bloom in mid to late April.
Herbal Peony: Herbal peonies have both apical and axillary flowers, long stems, and flowers mostly grow on leaf clusters. The flower shape is smaller than that of peonies, mostly star shaped or hemispherical, with a diameter of no more than 20 centimeters. The color can be red, white, or more (depending on the variety). Peonies bloom about half a month later than peonies, usually during the beginning of summer.
4、 Difference in Roots
Tree peony: The roots of peonies are fleshy, with well-developed roots and a light yellow or grayish yellow color. The root bark of peonies can be used as medicine, called "Danpi", which has the effects of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and analgesic.
Herbal Peony: The roots of herbaceous peonies are enlarged, and depending on the variety, the main roots are columnar or evenly stick shaped, with a color of yellow brown or gray purple. The roots of Paeonia lactiflora are fresh, crispy, and juicy, and can be used for medicinal purposes. It is called "white peony" in traditional Chinese medicine and has the effects of relieving spasms, pain, and promoting menstruation.
