Tree peony grafting technology
1.Grafting steps
Cutting anvil:
Cut off a portion of the bark from the selected rootstock (usually robust and pest free peony roots or peony roots) to expose the xylem. The degree of cutting the rootstock should be moderate. If it is too deep, it will affect the growth of the rootstock and scion, while if it is too shallow, it is easy to cause the rootstock to die.
Cutting scions:
Choose tree peony branches that are free from pests and diseases, healthy, and grow well as scions.
Cut a hole of the same size as the rootstock on the scion with a sharp blade, and the depth of the hole should be moderate, usually about one-third of the thickness of the grafted scion. The incision should be neat and free of burrs, in order to facilitate a tight connection between the cambium of the rootstock and scion.
Insertion:
Insert the trimmed scion into the mouth of the rootstock, ensuring a tight fit between the scion and the cambium of the rootstock. When inserting, pay attention to the direction and angle, and it is generally advisable to insert the scion at a 45 degree angle to the ground.
Binding:
Use grafting tape, plastic film or fine hemp rope, nylon rope to tightly tie the scion and rootstock together to prevent wind and water evaporation. The binding should be uniform and tight to ensure a firm bond between the scion and rootstock.
Moisturizing and shading:
After grafting, it is necessary to water the plants in a timely manner to keep the soil moist and promote the growth of new tissues.
During the initial stage of grafting, attention should be paid to shading to avoid direct sunlight damage to the new tissue.
2.Grafting method
There are various grafting methods for peonies, including root grafting, high-level branch grafting, bud grafting, etc. Here is a brief introduction to these methods:
Root connection method:
Choose robust tree peony roots as rootstocks, remove a portion of the bark, insert and tie the scion. This method is suitable for root grafting of peonies and has a high survival rate.
High level branch connection:
Grafting on tree peony branches is usually done in spring. The method of high-level branch grafting is relatively complex and requires proficient mastery of grafting techniques.
Sprout connection:
Choose to perform bud grafting on spring peonies before they wake up. Take out the buds of the tree peony, retain some leaves, and graft them onto the rootstock. This method is suitable for grafting tree peony buds and the operation is relatively simple.
3.Precautions
Grafting time:
The best time for grafting peonies is generally from late spring to early summer, when the temperature is suitable and there is sufficient rainfall, which is conducive to the growth and survival of new tissues. But the specific time may vary depending on the region, climate, and grafting method.
Grafting technology:
During the grafting process, it is necessary to master the operation skills of various tools proficiently to ensure the quality of grafting. At the same time, attention should be paid to disinfection treatment to prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests.
Maintenance management:
After grafting, peonies should be strengthened in maintenance and management, with regular fertilization, watering, weeding, pruning, etc. Attention should be paid to preventing and controlling pests and diseases, and improving the disease resistance of plants. At the same time, it is necessary to maintain soil moisture and suitable temperature conditions to promote the survival and growth of grafted seedlings.
In summary, the grafting of tree peony seedlings requires proficient mastery of grafting techniques, selection of appropriate grafting methods and times, and strengthened maintenance and management after grafting. Through these measures, the survival rate and quality of tree peony grafting can be improved.
