1. Growth habits
Enjoying sunshine:Tree peonies naturally enjoy sunlight, and sufficient sunlight is beneficial for their growth. However, it is not tolerant to the scorching summer sun, and when the temperature exceeds 25 ℃, the plant will enter a dormant state. Therefore, appropriate shading measures need to be taken during high temperatures in summer.
Cold resistance: Tree peony has strong cold resistance and can tolerate low temperatures of -30 ℃. This allows it to safely overwinter in northern regions without the need for excessive insulation measures.
Drought tolerance: Tree peonies are drought tolerant, but not tolerant to waterlogging. Its root system is well-developed, and its fleshy roots can store more water, so it can grow normally even in low water conditions. However, excessive water can cause root rot and affect plant growth.
Soil requirements: Tree peonies are suitable for growing in loose, deep, fertile, high dry, well drained neutral sandy loam soil. It is not suitable to grow in acidic or sticky soils, as these soils can affect the respiration and growth of its roots.
2. Growth characteristics
Growth rate: Tree peonies grow slowly, taking 5-6 years from seed germination to flowering. Therefore, sufficient patience and waiting time are required when planting peonies.
Flowering characteristics: The suitable temperature for tree peony flowering is 17-20 ℃, and it must undergo low-temperature treatment for 2-3 months before flowering. This makes peonies bloom most abundantly in the warm and cool environment of spring. Meanwhile, the flowers of peonies are large and beautiful, with rich colors and high ornamental value.
Adaptability: Tree peonies have strong adaptability and can grow in most parts of China. However, its growth and flowering conditions may vary under different climatic and soil conditions. Therefore, when planting peonies, it is necessary to choose and adjust according to the local climate and soil conditions.
