Why is tree peony more suitable for ground planting?
The reason why peonies are more suitable for planting than potted plants is mainly based on the following reasons:
Soil conditions: Peonies prefer fertile, loose, deep, and well drained soil. Their root system is woody, and waterlogging can easily lead to root rot and necrosis. Planting peonies on the ground can more easily meet these soil conditions by deep plowing and applying base fertilizers (such as bone meal, soybean cake, chicken manure, sheep manure, etc.) to ensure loose and fertile soil, which is beneficial for the growth of tree peony seedlings. In contrast, the soil capacity of potted peonies is limited, making it difficult to meet the soil requirements for their long-term growth. As the tree peony seedlings grow, frequent soil replacement is required, increasing the difficulty of maintenance.
Growth space:Tree peony is a deeply rooted plant with a well-developed root system, requiring a large growth space. Ground planted peonies can grow downward and around without restrictions, allowing the root system to fully stretch, which is beneficial for the healthy growth and flowering of the plant. However, the growth space of potted peonies is limited, and the root system cannot fully expand, which may lead to poor growth and flowering.
Temperature and Light: Peonies are cold resistant and sensitive to high temperatures, and must undergo 2 to 3 months of low-temperature treatment before flowering. Planting peonies on the ground can more easily adapt to temperature changes in the natural environment, meeting their low-temperature treatment needs through natural cooling. At the same time, peonies prefer sunlight and are afraid of sun exposure. When planting on the ground, it is advisable to choose a place with higher terrain, less likely to accumulate water, and facing east and sunny to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Potted peonies need to constantly adjust their placement according to seasonal and weather changes to meet their needs for light and temperature.
Maintenance management: The maintenance management of ground planted peonies is relatively simple, only requiring appropriate watering and fertilization during the growing season. Potted peonies require more refined maintenance and management, including regular soil replacement, watering, fertilization, pruning, etc., and it is necessary to constantly monitor their growth status and adjust maintenance measures in a timely manner.
In summary, peonies are more suitable for field planting rather than potted cultivation, mainly due to the advantages of field planting peonies in soil conditions, growth space, temperature and light, and maintenance management.
