How to avoid watering causing peony root rot
To prevent peony roots from rotting due to excessive watering, the following measures can be taken:
1、 Control watering amount
The principle of seeing dryness and wetness: follow the watering principle of "seeing dryness and wetness", that is, wait until the soil surface is slightly dry before watering to avoid the soil being too wet for a long time.
Moderate watering: When watering each time, ensure that the water can penetrate deep into the soil, but do not let the water accumulate at the bottom of the pot to avoid root hypoxia and decay.
2、 Choose the appropriate watering time
Watering during Cool Times: Watering during cool times such as in the morning or evening, when the temperature is low and water evaporation is slow, is beneficial for the soil to fully absorb water and reduce waterlogging.
3、 Observe soil moisture
Regular check: Regularly check the soil moisture by gently inserting your fingers into the soil to feel the moisture. Watering should only be done when the soil feels dry.
4、 Improve soil drainage
Choose breathable soil: When planting peonies, choose soil with good breathability, such as sandy loam or humus soil. These soils are conducive to the infiltration and discharge of water, reducing the phenomenon of waterlogging.
Adding drainage materials: Adequate amounts of drainage materials such as vermiculite and perlite can be added to the soil to improve its drainage performance.
5、 Pay attention to other maintenance factors
Avoid excessive fertilization: Excessive fertilization can lead to high salt concentration in the soil, affecting the water absorption capacity of roots. Therefore, fertilization should be carried out according to the instructions on the fertilizer packaging, and attention should be paid to controlling the amount of fertilizer appropriately.
Pruning and repotting: When pruning and repotting, ensure that the root wound scars before repotting, and disinfect the wound and potting soil to prevent fungal infection from causing root rot.
Ventilation and lighting: Placing peonies in well ventilated and well lit areas for maintenance is beneficial for the healthy growth of plants and normal respiration of roots.
In summary, measures such as controlling watering amount, selecting appropriate watering time, observing soil moisture, improving soil drainage, and paying attention to other maintenance factors can effectively prevent peony roots from rotting due to excessive watering.
