How To Take Windproof Measures for Tree Peonies in Winter?
1.Pruning and tying
Pruning: Before winter arrives, gently gather the branches of the tree peony together to reduce the windward area. When closing branches, try to maintain their natural shape and avoid excessive bending or damage.
Binding: Use plastic or nylon ropes to wrap and secure the gathered branches from bottom to top, ensuring that the branches do not scatter. When bundling, it is necessary to be moderately tight. If it is too tight, it may damage the branches, and if it is too loose, it may not have the windproof effect.
2.Build a wind barrier
Material selection:
Materials for wind barriers can include sorghum stalks, corn stalks, bamboo fences, reed mats, etc. These materials are both lightweight and durable.
Construction method:
Install a wind barrier in the upwind direction of the tree peony, with a height exceeding the height of the tree, to ensure effective blocking of cold winds. Wind barriers should be supported or nailed with wooden stakes such as cedar or bamboo poles to prevent them from being blown down by strong winds. The leaking area can be covered with straw, tied with a thin stick, or filled with mud outside the mat to enhance the windproof effect.
3.Coverage protection
Newspaper wrapping:
Using waste newspapers or kraft paper to wrap the branches of tree peonies can prevent wind, block sunlight, and regulate temperature. When wrapping, try to wrap it tightly to reduce the impact of external factors on the tree peony.
Woven bag wrapping:
Due to the thinness of newspapers and their tendency to become wet and exposed when exposed to snow or wind, woven bags can be used to wrap them outside the newspaper. Woven bags can not only protect newspapers from damage from the outside world, but also have a certain anti cold effect on tree peonies.
Soil burial method:
For shorter tree peony plants, soil burial method can be used for windproof. Even if the roots and some branches of the plant are buried with soil, the thickness of the soil cover should exceed 10 centimeters of the branches. This method can effectively protect plants from the damage of cold winds and low temperatures.
4.Other measures
Pouring frozen water:
It is best to pour "frozen water" once before cold prevention to maintain sufficient moisture in the soil, which helps peonies survive the winter safely.
Timely removal of anti cold materials:
When the temperature rises and stabilizes at 0-4 ℃ in spring, anti cold materials can be gradually removed. For the first time, the film and some coverings can be removed first, leaving a certain thickness of soil layer for natural growth and pushing out the coverings. When the new branches reach a certain length, remove the remaining coverings and carry out pruning and bud removal work.
In summary, the windproof measures for tree peonies need to comprehensively consider multiple aspects such as branch bundling, building wind barriers, covering protection, and other auxiliary measures. Only by doing these tasks well can we ensure that peonies are protected from cold winds in winter.
