How to transplant plant tree peony seed seedling?
1、 Choose the appropriate planting time
The best time to plant naked rooted peonies is in autumn, especially from the beginning of autumn to late October. This period is conducive to the regeneration of peony roots, improving transplant survival rate and ensuring safe overwintering. Avoid planting in spring, as peonies are in the awakening period and transplanting them can damage newly sprouted roots, affecting survival.
2、 Prepare soil
Soil requirements: Peonies prefer loose, fertile, neutral and slightly alkaline soil. You can choose to mix two parts of nutrient soil and one part of field soil, and add an appropriate amount of flower promoting organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility and permeability.
Soil treatment: Before planting, the soil should be deeply plowed to a depth of about 50cm, and combined with the application of bottom fertilizer and insecticides for soil treatment to reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.
3、 Processing peony seedlings
Pruning the root system: Cut off the broken and diseased roots of the bare root peony, remove the aging and injured roots, and shorten some of the excessively long main roots. Try to preserve the integrity of the root system as much as possible to ensure sufficient nutrient supply during the peony callus process.
Drying: Place the soaked peony seedlings in a well ventilated area to dry and wait for them to be potted for planting.
4、 Planting process
Excavation: According to the size and spacing requirements of peony seedlings (generally 1m × 4m), dig planting holes with a flat bottom to allow the roots of the seedlings to fully contact the soil.Placement of seedlings: Place bare rooted peony seedlings into the hole to allow the root system to naturally distribute and stretch.
Fill soil: First fill the topsoil, then fill the core soil. When filling the soil to half of the hole, gently lift the seedling by hand and shake it left and right to fully fill the center of the seedling root with soil. After the soil is filled, it must be firmly planted, and the planting depth should be level or slightly lower than the soil surface at the root neck.
5、 Watering and maintenance
Watering the roots: After planting, it is necessary to promptly water the roots with moist water. You can use a previously soaked solution of carbendazim to promote root growth and reduce the risk of bacterial infection.
Maintenance: After watering, place it in a cool and ventilated environment for one week, and then restore normal maintenance. Pay attention to keeping the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging that can cause root rot.
Insulation measures: As the temperature gradually decreases in autumn, insulation measures need to be taken for newly transplanted peony seedlings. You can cover a layer of plastic film around the soil and outside the branches to improve the survival rate.
6、 Subsequent management
Fertilization: After applying sufficient base fertilizer in the year of peony planting, there is no need for topdressing. In the second year after planting, fertilization should be applied three times a year, before flowering, after flowering, and after the beginning of autumn.
Pruning: After planting peonies in autumn, it is necessary to promptly prune the old, weak, withered branches, diseased and insect infested branches, and overly dense branches to concentrate nutrients, promote root growth, and promote vigorous flowering.
Disease and pest control: Regularly inspect plants, take corresponding measures in a timely manner if diseases and pests are found, such as using insecticides or adjusting the maintenance environment.
