How to transplant tree peonies in autumn?
1.Site selection and preparation
Location selection: Tree peonies prefer high dryness and avoid low humidity and heat, so they should be planted in areas with slightly higher terrain, good drainage, and sufficient sunlight. Meanwhile, the soil should be loose and fertile, with sandy loam being preferred.
Soil preparation: Remove impurities, small stones, etc. from the soil to ensure fertility, good ventilation, and good drainage. Mature organic fertilizers, soybean cakes, bone meal and other mixed fertilizers can be applied to improve soil fertility.
2.Transplanting and Planting
Transplant timing: It is advisable to transplant in the Yellow River Basin between the autumnal equinox and the cold dew (around late September to early October), which is the mid autumn season. After planting, new roots are easily developed in the roots, which is beneficial for survival, overwintering, and growth in the second year.
Digging and fertilizing: Dig a soil pit with a diameter of 30-40 centimeters and a depth of about 50-60 centimeters, with a pit spacing of about 100 centimeters. Apply decomposed organic fertilizers and other mixed fertilizers into the pit, and sprinkle some pesticides to prevent pests from damaging the roots.
Transplanting method: Before transplanting, ensure that the root system of the peony has grown new small roots and the plant has entered a dormant period (leaves turn yellow and fall off). When excavating peonies, be careful to preserve enough original soil and avoid damaging the main roots. Evenly distribute the root system of the seedlings within the hole, ensuring that all roots are upright and not twisted, and then cover them with soil layer by layer to ensure stability.
Watering: After transplanting, water continuously 2-3 times to make the soil and roots tightly bonded. Afterwards, keep the soil moist, but be careful to avoid water accumulation.
3.Management and maintenance
Insulation and Moisturizing: When it's cold, it's best to cover the tree peony with a layer of straw or leaves to keep it warm and moisturized, reducing the stimulation of cold on the roots.
Timely Fertilization: Newly planted peonies should not be fertilized until six months later. Starting from the second year, apply the first fertilizer (flower promoting fertilizer) when the leaves and flower buds stretch after the earth thaws, apply the second fertilizer (bud promoting fertilizer) within half a month after the flowers wither, and apply the third fertilizer (base fertilizer) in autumn and winter.
Control watering amount: Watering in autumn should be done in moderation to prevent waterlogging caused by excessive moisture. Watering should be reduced in winter and early spring, and attention should be paid to timely watering during spring drought. In summer, when the weather is hot and evaporation is high, more watering is needed, but excessive watering should not be done during the rainy season.
Disease and pest control: Before the occurrence of diseases and pests, use slime to isolate the diseases and pests, or use anti insect drugs for spray treatment. Meanwhile, pay attention to the prevention and control of diseases such as powdery mildew.
4.Precautions
Avoid damaging roots: During transplanting and planting, try to avoid damaging the main and fibrous roots of peonies to avoid affecting their survival and growth.
Observe the plant condition: Within one week after transplantation, observe the plant condition more often to ensure that it will not get sick or die due to environmental changes.
In summary, planting tree peonies in autumn requires selecting suitable locations and soils, mastering correct transplanting and planting methods, doing a good job in management and maintenance, and paying attention to relevant matters. This is the only way to ensure that tree peonies can survive and grow vigorously after being planted in autumn.
