How to care and protect tree peonies in autumn?
1. Soil management
Soil selection: Tree peonies prefer soils with high and dry terrain, deep soil layers, loose and fertile soil, and good drainage. If the soil conditions are poor, it can be improved by mixing perlite, river sand, or decomposed compost to enhance soil permeability and fertility.
Disinfection treatment: Before planting or soil replacement, the soil should be disinfected to kill potential pests and provide a clean environment for the growth of tree peonies.
2.Watering management
Moderate watering: In early autumn, peonies have a high demand for water, but excessive watering should also be avoided to prevent waterlogging. It is generally recommended to water thoroughly every week or so. As the weather cools down, the frequency of watering should be reduced to once every two weeks or even longer.
Keep it moist: When watering, make sure the soil is moist, but not too wet or waterlogged, to avoid root rot and other diseases.
3.Fertilization management
Reasonable fertilization: Autumn is a critical period for the active root system and nutrient absorption of tree peonies. August is the best time to supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, which can effectively promote flower bud differentiation and maturation. It is recommended to choose slow-release fertilizers and apply them according to the instructions to avoid excessive concentration causing root burning.
Organic fertilizer application: In autumn, mature organic fertilizers such as compost and manure can also be applied to provide comprehensive nutritional support.
4. Light management
Adequate sunlight: Despite entering autumn, tree peonies still need to receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Adequate sunshine is not only beneficial for photosynthesis, but also enhances the cold resistance of plants.
5.Pruning management
Timely pruning: Autumn is a good time to prune tree peonies. Dried and aged branches and leaves should be removed in a timely manner to reduce unnecessary nutrient consumption, while also promoting ventilation and light transmission, and preventing the occurrence of pests and diseases. But it is not advisable to carry out large-scale pruning during the flowering period to avoid affecting the opening of the inflorescence.
Pruning technique: When pruning, it is necessary to remove diseased and weak branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, etc., to make the plant shape more beautiful. After trimming, the wound should be disinfected to prevent bacterial infection.
6.Disease and pest control
Regular inspection: In autumn, the leaves, branches, and roots of tree peonies should be regularly inspected to promptly detect and address pest and disease issues.
Scientific prevention and control: Once pests and diseases are discovered, appropriate pesticides should be selected for spraying according to the specific situation. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen ventilation and transparency, improve the growth environment, and enhance the disease resistance of tree peonies.
7.Temperature management
Suitable temperature: As the temperature gradually decreases in autumn, it is necessary to ensure that the growth environment temperature of tree peonies is suitable.
