Winter management of tree peonies
1.Temperature management
Although peonies have a certain degree of cold resistance, cold prevention measures still need to be taken in extremely cold areas. Planting peonies on the ground can be used to build simple greenhouses or flower sheds, covered with plastic film, grass curtains, and other materials to keep warm.
2.Control watering
In winter, the temperature is low and water evaporation is slow, resulting in a decrease in water demand for peonies. The watering principle of 'see dry, see wet' should be followed, that is, watering should be done after the surface of the soil in the pot is completely dry.
Watering time should be chosen on sunny mornings, avoiding watering on cold nights to prevent frostbite to the roots.
The amount of watering should not be too much to keep the soil moist and avoid root rot caused by accumulated water.
3.Stop fertilizing
Winter is the dormant period of peonies, and no additional fertilization is needed. Fertilization at this time can easily stimulate the sprouting of new shoots in peonies, consume nutrients, and affect the flowering of the following year.
If the soil is too poor, a thin fertilizer can be applied before winter to supplement nutrients.
4.Disease and pest control
In winter, it is still necessary to pay attention to pest control and regularly check the growth of tree peony plants.
Once signs of pests and diseases are detected, timely prevention and control measures should be taken, and biological pesticides or low toxicity chemical pesticides can be used for spraying and control.
5.Trimming and shaping
Winter is the best time to prune peonies, which can be used to shape and shape beautiful plant shapes, promoting flowering in the following year.
Pruning should be carried out between fallen leaves and sprouting, mainly targeting over dense branches, diseased and insect infested branches, dead branches, excessively long branches, etc.
